When Shalev's debut was published, it sparked intense outrage in Israel. Now, almost 30 years later, the time seems ripe for this early literary masterpiece. A young woman, who never reveals her name, recounts story after story. What really happened to the narrator during this half-year is uncertain. One thing is clear: she left her husband and daughter for her lover and is now struggling with the consequences. Grief, abandonment, fear, and anger cause her to perceive the world as an apocalypse of pain. "Zeruya Shalev's first novel is one of the most audacious works of postmodern Israeli literature. It could be described as the fountainhead of her entire narrative art." (Avner Holtzman)
