Painting and sculpture

The collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart distinguishes itself through the impressively wide historic span from the early fifthteenth century to the present and through worldwide unique groups of artworks and outstanding individual works of art. Conceived as a classic painting gallery and enhanced by sculptures of the late nineteenth and twentieth century, the collection also began to integrate new media such as installation, video and photography by the end of the 1960s. Together with electronic media, these have become a significant part of the holdings of contemporary art and are the focus of the current acquisition policy.

While the Old Master collection and works of art from the nineteenth century and Classic Modernism (up to about 1960) are exhibited in the Kunstmuseum, the contemporary collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel and Emanuel-Hoffmann Foundation are shown in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst.

Highlights of the fifthteenth and sixteenth century are paintings by Konrad Witz (15), Hans Holbein the Elder (5) and especially Hans Holbein the Younger (35), as well as Hans Fries (8), Hans Baldung (called Grien) (10), Niklaus Manuel (called Deutsch) (8), Lucas Cranach the Elder (18) and outstanding works by the Upper Rhenish Masters of the fifthteenth and sixteenth century as well as Flemish art of the sixteenth century.

Hans Holbein d.J.

The main features of the seventeenth and eighteenth century are the Flemish and Dutch schools (Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Frans Francken, Rembrandt, Jacob Ruisdael), German and Dutch still lifes (Wilhelm Claesz Heda, Georg Flegel, Sebastian Stoskopff) and an important group of paintings by the Swiss artist Caspar Wolf (14).

Claude Monet

The Kunstmuseum owns the worldwide largest collection of paintings by Arnold Böcklin (82). Further noteworthy in the nineteenth century collection are the most comprehensive group of Nazarene paintings in Switzerland with works by Koch (5), Overbeck, and Olivier et al., important assemblages of works by Füssli (9), French painting from Romanticism to Realism including Delacroix (7), Géricault, Corot and Courbet, Swiss art with Birmann, Calame, Anker, Zünd, Buchser (227), Segantini and  Hodler (39), German art with Feuerbach and Marées and especially French Impressionism with works of art by Monet (4), Degas (4), Renoir (8), Pissarro (7), Sisley and Postimpressionism represented by Cézanne (5), Gauguin (4) and van Gogh (3).

Sculptures by Rodin (8) complement this significant focus of the collection as do superb permanent loans and private ownerships.

Paul Klee

Distinguished highlights make the collection of twentieth century art one of the finest in Europe. It is considerably enriched by the outstanding holdings of the Emanuel Hoffman Foundation. Significant are particularly the Cubist collection, Expressionism, American art after 1945 and the unique compilation of works by Pablo Picasso (26), Juan Gris (14), Fernand Léger (20), Paul Klee (26), Hans Arp (28), Alberto Giacometti (29), Marc Chagall (13), Barnett Newman (7), Joseph Beuys (19), Jasper Johns (7), Frank Stella (7) and Bruce Nauman (52), et al.

The contemporary art collections of the Kunstmuseum and the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation ideally complement each other in content and new acquisitions. The collection is shown in the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart.
