New Building

The Kunstmuseum Basel is about to undergo a major transformation. Across Dufourstrasse, facing the Main Building and connected to it on the basement level, an exhibition building is rising that will satisfy the highest contemporary standards for the presentation of art. Designed by the renowned Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein, the New Building will also be another architectonic highlight in the Basel cityscape. Starting in 2016, the Kunstmuseum Basel will thus present art in three different venues—the third is the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, its dedicated contemporary-arts space.

With these changes, we lay the foundation for a future worthy of the Kunstmuseum’s tradition as a leading international art institution. We look forward to welcoming future generations of art and architecture fans from Basel, the surrounding areas, Switzerland, and the entire world to the Kunstmuseum Basel, home to the city’s famous—and the world’s oldest—public collection of art.

The New Building’s primary purpose will be to serve the presentation of art. With each new temporary exhibition that will be held here, it will become the museum’s agship venue. In addition to its main function of accommodating special exhibitions, it will feature exhibition spaces of various sizes for temporary presentations of art from the collections. The New Building will thus also act as a sort of bridge between the Main Building, where art from the fteenth century onward will be on display, and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst with its collection of works from the late twentieth and especially the twenty-first centuries. Room and video installations, large-format paintings and photographs can be shown in fully adequate settings.

The realization of the New Building, designed by the Basel-based architects Christ & Gantenbein, would not have been possible without the active support of private sponsors, led by the Laurenz Foundation, which donated the site to the city and defrays half of the construction expenses. Pursuant to a vote of the Grand Council of Basel, the public will contribute another CHF 50 million toward the construction costs.
