The new lushly illustrated book about a unique collection
The Kunstmuseum Basel is home to one of the largest public art collections in Europe. In its unique history, it has assembled works from the early fifteenth century to the present. This lavishly illustrated catalogue presents and comments on 160 masterpieces from the museum ’ s collection of paintings and sculptures. Among the Old Masters, these include works by Konrad Witz, the Holbein family, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. The nineteenth century is extensively represented by Cézanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, Monet, and Renoir. A special accent on Swiss painters is set with works by Füssli, Böcklin, and Hodler. From the twentieth-century modern era, particular importance is placed on Cubist, German Expressionist, and American works of art. The publication also features extremely important key works by artists such as Picasso, Léger, Chagall, and Giacometti. Post-1960 works in the collection include pieces by Beuys, Warhol, and Judd.
