Museum für Gegenwartskunst
Beginning February 2015, the Kunstmuseum Basel will close its main building for renovation work and to connect to the extension building before re-opening in April 2016. Select masterpieces from the Kunstmuseum Basel will nevertheless remain on view throughout the closure. The museum’s modern masterpieces will remain on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in the exhibition Cézanne to Richter, which opens on February 14, 2015. The Museum of Contemporary Art will remain open throughout and present five further exciting exhibitions in addition to Cézanne to Richter. The Museum der Kulturen will host select old masterpieces from Basel’s public art collection in the exhibition Holbein. Cranach. Grünewald. The Kunstmuseum Basel will be welcomed as guest for about ten months.
Core pieces of the Kunstmuseum Basel will also be displayed at the two most important Spanish art museums: The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía will present a survey of the modern and contemporary art in the Basel collection, as well as an exhibition of work from the Rudolf Staechelin Collection and the Im Obersteg Collection, two eminent private collections in Basel that have long been closely affiliated with the Kunstmuseum Basel. The famous Basel Picassos will be shown in the heart of the Museo Nacional del Prado.
