Le Corbeau et le Renard
Revolt of Language with Marcel Broodtaers
Kurator: Søren Grammel
The exhibition presents films by the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924–1976) from the holdings of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation. The selection is enhanced by loans from the Estate of Marcel Broodthaers and works by Hans Arp, Alighiero Boetti, Lszl Moholy-Nagy and others. The show is named after a central installation of Broodthaers, which in turn takes the title from La Fontaine’s well-known fable “Le Corbeau et Le Renard”, in which the fox uses his rhetorical skill to turn the material inequality between himself and the crow on its head. A strategy we may compare to the way Broodthaers himself worked: by toying with the relation between linguistic and visual signs, the artist puts aesthetic categories and the institutions that sustain them to the test—for example, by printing numbers on a canvas and then projec - ting a film on it.
