Today’s broader conception of what art is entails a way of looking at art that no longer rigorously subdivides it into eras and genres but instead perceives it as a simultaneous whole. In this regard, the Basel collection of Richard and Ulla Dreyfus-Best is a pioneering achievement: opulent and yet compelling, it is founded on the principle that the “stylish style” of the works is no less important than their originality and quality. The result is a cabinet of wonders, a plethora of fascinating visual worlds that spans all eras down to the present, an extensive exploration of the forms of the possible in art. The Kunstmuseum Basel dedicates a large exhibition to the collection, presenting a selection of ca. 120 works that have never been on public display in this ensemble.
