Drawings around 1500
Curator: Christian Müller

Drawings of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, mostly from the
region of the Upper Rhine, are among the highlights of the collection at
the Kupferstichkabinett Basel. A selection will be on view, many of which
were part of the Amerbach Collection. The Kupferstichkabinett owes its
international renown to such masters as Hans Holbein the Elder, Hans
Holbein the Younger, Hans Baldung Grien, Urs Graf and Niklaus Manuel
Deutsch, but the extraordinary and, indeed, unique historical significance
of the collection is indebted to the works created in the workshops of
these artists or by others in their circle. The drawings were often anonymous,
having been made as exercises or studies for paintings, sculptures
and goldsmith designs. Of exceptional quality, they provide surprising
insights into the way in which craftsmen and artists worked at the time.
